The subject: Cheryl Moggs is an indigenous artist (from Toobeah,Q). She was the winner of 2018 National NAIDOC poster competition - the theme was "Because of her we can". The graphic components within the portrait (used with Cheryl's permission) are symbols she developed specifically for the QIC RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan). Cheryl (commissioned artist) and I (graphic designer) journeyed together to deliver the completed RAP for Michael Maranta and the staff at QIC.
Toobeah is depicted in the background. Cheryl invited me and my children to go "on country" with her back in January 2019. The background is a colourful impression of the riverbed near her childhood home - a very special place to Cheryl.
Cheryl is very attuned to country and really sees an intensity to the colours in the bush. Her own paintings are bright and colourful which has been reflected in my choice of colours for this work also.
I feel very privileged to have been able to get to know Cheryl better through the painting of this portrait, and grateful for the opportunities to work with her. I'm very honoured to call this inspirational and talented lady my friend.
